Hey all! Just writing on here to try and get some answers. My fiance and I are currently living in Parma, OH about 15 minutes from downtown Cleveland. We're looking for a place that's less populated and has some land to purchase in Ohio. Is New Philadelphia a good place to look at for land? Looking for something a little more "country", but would still like the convenience of a local grocery store/market near by. I'm finishing up my nursing degree this fall, how are the hospitals out there? And last but not least, no kids yet, but I would like to know how the schools are there since we plan on staying there for awhile if it's the right fit for us. Thanks for your time, hope to hear a few responses back!

Well, Tuscarawas County is fairly rural but New Philly and Dover would have normal amenities you would be looking for. New Philly even has a mall - not a large one, but they do have some normal suburban shopping.

IMO that's a little far out of the swing of things, that's way down I-77. But on the other hand maybe that's what you want.

I suppose if I wanted to be "out" but close enough to where I wouldn't have to travel too far for basics and then be maybe 30-40 minutes from the closest major shopping area (Belden Village) that would work.

Another bonus: You'd be close to Amish country for bulk food, terrific restaurants, scenic drives, festivals, etc.

Thanks for the reply Kentstate57.

And braindead0, I'm looking at the city-data website for New Philly...says Union hospital is in Dover 4 miles away, Twin City hospital is in Dennison 9 miles away and then Aultman hospital is in Canton 21 miles away...

I lived in Dover/New Philly for about three years in the mid 1990s. One of our favorite spots was Tuscora Park. A great park with a carousel and other amenities. Like a trip back in time to the early 1900s. A rare find these days.

Union Hospital is a pretty nice place. It's right on the border of Dover and New Phila. I know in recent years they have added a few of the stat care/urgent care facilities in the area. Aside from that, you would probably have to travel to Canton to Altman or Timken, but it's an easy drive that would take 20-25 minutes.

I grew up in the "country" part of New Phila, particularly on StoneCreek Road/County Road 21. That may be a good place for you to look. It provides a nice country setting with easy access to town. Also look at areas on south side of town. As far as grocery stores are concerned, you have Walmart, Bueler's (I can't remember the spelling), and Giant Eagle. To me, Dover is more of a residential area. The mall is small but decent. Last time I was home, there was a Kohl's, Elderbeerman, JCP, and Sears along with some other stores in the middle. There aren't tons of restaurants, but enough to have a nice dinner. Red Lobster, Applebee's, Bob Evans, Texas Roadhouse, a decent food court in the mall, and all the typical fast food places.

Amish country is great for some "home cooked" food, wonderful bakeries, and bulk stores.

I've been gone for 4 years now, but I still visit my family on the holidays. As mentioned above, it really is a trip back in time. Very few things have actually changed since I have been gone.
Hopefully this helps you a little bit! I actually am kind of amazed that I find myself forgetting the street names!

Thanks all for your responses! It's greatly appreciated and I think my fiance and I will pay a visit soon to New Phila and see what it's all about.

Off and on throughout my 30 years of life I have lived in New Phila for a total of around 9 years scattered over 5 or 6 different stints. I was born in Union Hospital and my Mother works there now. Its not a bad little hospital they have renovated and added on over the last few years. Twin City Hospital is in nearby Dennison and serves the southern portion of T-County but is generally not well respected and even people that live in Dennison will usually go to Union unless theyre in dire need of care immediately. Unlike me who moved away with my grandparents when I was little, my sister has never left New Phila until she went to Malone University in Canton to get her nursing degree. She intends to work at Union when she graduates. As for the rest of New Phila, they have a Giant Eagle and a Buehlers grocery store. They have a Drug Mart a Wal Mart an Aldis a Lowes and as someone mentioned a small Mall. They have one coffee shop besides the one in the Mall and Tuscora Park is the best park I have ever seen and i have lived in 7 states. If you really want small town with enough city conveniences to get by without having to leave town very often then New Phila is great. Personally I hate it, but as I mentioned I left as a child I actually grew up in Las Vegas Nevada so that small town crap that my sister loves and that you may be looking for is not for me. Ive tried to move back there several times over the years to be closer to family but I can never stand it for more than a few months. If you do decide to relocate to that area make sure you only search for homes in New Phila or Dover. The surrounding towns are very dumpy/trashy. Not that theyre dangerous or anything you will never have a problem with safety in any part of TCounty at anytime day or night but outside of New Phila/Dover TCounty is trashy with the exception of Sugarcreek which is Amish Country and on the Holmes County border.
