It's been some 30+ years since plant closings devastated Barberton and Norton. Yet, when one drives through these towns, it is like being in a way-back machine. Nothing seems to change....no business growth, no new retail, nothing. One has to go out of town to find a coffee shop or, with the exception of pizza places and fast-food hamburger places, anything decent to eat.

Yes, Barberton has built new schools, which look nice, and their education system is highly rated. However, it takes more than schools to attract new residents.

Wadsworth and Massillon were also hit hard, and though they still haven't completely come back, they have made leaps and bounds to recover. New housing developments, new retail, new industrial parks.

The only nice place to shop in Barberton is the Giant Eagle, and one has to wonder how long they will stay there.

Both cities are known as "white ghetto" for a reason. Nobody wants to live there, unless it's their only option.

That's not an answer....that is the point.....other cities have made an effort to move out of that situation, and have, at least been somewhat successful. Norton has a better chance at doing so than Barberton, as it does not have the great numbers of slum housing as Barberton. Making an effort to bring in new factories and businesses can result in new jobs. Tearing down unsightly buildings can make a city more attractive.

A city does not have to stay in the "ghetto" unless its city government chooses to do so.

If I understand correctly, they passed a levy in November to resolve that issue.

Meth city/white trash haven. Avoid if you can.

Same goes for Kenmore, Springfield and Lakemore.

It's sad because IMO the Barberton, Norton, Copley area would be a nice place to live if not for all the rif raff.

Don't forget large parts of Cuyahoga Falls, Coventry, and Tallmadge. White trash galore!
