Got a potential opportunity to move to Akron, OH. I have also heard a lot of not so good things about Cleveland. Should I make the move? Anyone can share some insight of Akron and Cleveland? safety? things to do? climate? diversity?

Well Akron is 35 miles from Cleveland, so they function as different areas. Cleveland is not a bad place anyway. Having been to Memphis I can't say it was noticeably any better than Cleveland. In fact, my impression was that Memphis is noticeably worse.

Safety - both Akron and Cleveland are mostly safe. If you avoid the bad spots it should not be an issue, which is pretty easy to do. Crime is mostly concentrated, and is especially bad in Cleveland eastern inner-city neighborhoods.

Things to do - well, that depends on your interests. They have the same things typically found in similar sized cities. There is obviously more to do in Cleveland than Akron since it is bigger. Should not be an issue unless you are used to someplace like NYC or San Francisco.

Climate - it gets cold in the winter. East of Cleveland also gets loads of snow. Summer and fall are great.

Diversity – mostly white with a sizable black minority. Cleveland has a good amount of white ethnic flair (i.e. polish, Italian, Russian). Akron is more vanilla.

Could give you more info about Akron or Cleveland, but need to know what you're looking for.

Memphis has the highest crime rate of any major city in the nation. Akron is among Ohio's fastest-growing and most progressive cities.

Take your pick.

Akron is not glamorous. It does not have much nightlife. It does, however, have a lot to offer. Good cheap real estate, decent shopping, nice restaurants, a super art museum, the University of Akron, good schools, and a family friendly atmosphere. If you are not looking for those things, then you probably wouldn't like it. It is an hour from Cleveland and 2 hours from Columbus.
My son works in West Memphis, AR and he wouldn't want to live there or Memphis.

Akron is a very nice city. And yeah it doesn't have much nightlife but there ARE some clubs and bars around, and they aren't exactly empty from what I've heard. It also has a lower crime rate, and it's probably going to surpass Toledo population-wise in about 5 years or so.

Cleveland and Akron have slowly become a megatropolis even though most indigenous Akronites refuse to admit it (I don't know why that is -- they share everything with Cleveland both media and industry-wise). Anymore, there is literally about 1/2 square mile of "rural" area (Bath Twp.) between the two along I-77. You can drive from Cleveland State Univ. (in Downtown Cleveland) to Akron Univ. (in downtown Akron) in 40 minutes. I've done it many times. The Cleveland and Akron areas are both much nicer and safer than the Memphis area. Memphis is a pit. The only thing good about it is Rendezvous Ribs (even Graceland is in the middle of a ghetto). This isn't to say that there aren't areas of either OH cities to steer clear of. There certainly are. Otherwise, the greater Cleveland Metro Area is very cosmopolitan where ethnic diversity and influence, artistic prowess, educational excellence, and top-tier medical institutions abound. If you don't believe me, come and have a visit.

PS - Sorry to sound like such a homer, but I'm sick and tired of the ignorant morons who talk down about our area. They have either never been here and read too much on Forbes.com or live in Parma (a suburb) and never go farther away from home than the local watering hole.

akron-cleveland-N.E.Ohio any day over memphis.. i do agree the bbq is awsome in memphis though ! also, i think clevelandcollector is dead wrong about parma. imo parma has become metro clevelands largest ethnic nieghborhood. its what the old "slavik village", or "collinwoods" of cleveland proper used to be like.

I don't think you quite got what I meant. And, seeing that I live in a directly neighboring community, I'm pretty sure I know exactly what it's like. Parma has always been ethnic. The problem is that all too many Parm-ites never travel farther than 6 miles from their house and listen to waaaay too much WTAM.

Memphis is a city with a rich cultural history (music & food) but mentally, as a community, it's about 30 years in the past. I would not recommend it as a metro because I find it stifling and depressing (the crime is just outrageous for a city its size), but if really want to live there, look at Bartlett, TN and Southaven/Olive Grove/Hernando, MS.

However - winter there is pretty easy to cope with.
