I was born and raised in Akron Ohio in the Kenmore area. I left back in the late 1970's and Fairlawn was a nice area back then. I remember when they built Rolling Hills mall I think that was the name of it because it would save the trip driving to downtown Akron to Polsky's and O'Neills.

I lived within walking or biking distance of Pfeiffer Elementary, Kenmore Library and Kenmore High School.

I had heard things have changed in Kenmore a lot. I went to Kenmore High School and heard they tore down a number of homes around there to build a freeway. Guess what they say is true you can't go home again.

As for the weather, I remember August would be the most humid month and the winters could be very cold.

IT WAS CALLED ROLLING Acres mall and is in a state of blight, hard to believe the once great mall would fail between the montrose area and heavy shoplifting, its trying to find new life as anything, one thought was it be turned into a "old folks home" well thats not pc but it would have rooms restaurants medical facilities etc all under one roof.
not a bad idea as for the elders to be able to shop, etc. in a safe atmosphere, and heck the weather in akron isnt anything to be out in anyway. maybe they could make a florida room where it would have sand and palm trees?
as for kenmore its struggling with a high crime rate,dive bars and paycheck loans stores . quite a different kenmore that you grew up in for sure

Yep, Kenmore, home of mostly crime & trash now. =( I grew up there & graduated from Kenmore High in '93, so it's sad. My friends & parents still live there! Really sad, it was at least okay when I was growing up there! =(

I lived in Stow, which was utterly peaceful and quiet, although I was commuting into Hudson, not Akron. The Fairlawn-Montrose and Green areas are decent as well for living, shopping, dining, and sitting in traffic.

You have ten seconds to talk me into anything south of Green, including North Canton. One, two, ten. Time's up.

Fairlawn is wonderful ! Stayed there for 2 yrs and loved it ..

My brother just sold his house and two rental units in Fairlawn due to the area going Section 8. Yup..Fairlawn..I can't belive they allowed that to happen. The area is going downhill so I would recommend the Norton school district if you have kids. Forget any public schools in Akron. I grew up in Akron, left in 1976, returned a few times, most recently for my parents passing away, I while I have some good memories of the area I think it's heading down the wrong path. Most of the money seems to be from the retired blue color/white colar workers that worked the rubber shops etc...they received benifits and pensions...something that the current area residents don't seem to get. In the next decade most of that generation will pass away and the area will really be hit. I'm not saying the whole area is dependent on retired people, but they do provide a large amount of money to the area. My sister is a Nurse and tried to live/work there but the wages were lower and she felt the same thing was going to happen. If you don't have kids and a secure job, it's a cheap place to live. The area has lots of older rance style homes at very affordable homes. I lived in California and currently in Florida which has much more expensive homes. The weather is not too great and tends to be "grey" alot, but there are some beautiful parks and lots of trees which we don't have in Florida. I was in Akron in July and did not see so many illegals which is a big problem in California and Florida. Don't care about that?..well..wait till they destroy your school system and you will care about that problem. I would love to move back to Ohio, but maybe the Norton area or Hudson. Those areas are pretty much secure and safer compared to Akron/Fairlawn. Just a thought

the illegal workers or as the pc call them undocumented persons invaded the Akron area this summer when a hail storm blew through Firestone park and they under cut the resident (legal) roofers prices ..many stayed so they will be catered to by the city council and many will stay...stealing jobs from LEGAL citizens in a area where jobs are scarce........deport them now! this should be one of your reasons to choose your next leaders on ,whether it be local,or nat'l....but hey I may be wrong

I worked in Fairlawn, across from Summit Mall, for 12 years. My wife and I really enjoyed the Fairlawn area. We visited about two years ago, and I would still like living in that area. It is an easy commute to Cleveland, Central Akron, Highland Square (one of our favorite areas), Blossom Music Center, and many, many good attractions. When we were last there, we noticed lots of development west of Fairlawn on Market Street. Just makes the area more attractive to us. We can recommend it highly based on our experiences there.

So let's get this straight, the city of Akron is now hiring illegal/undocumented workers, is that correct?

I doubt that the City of Akron would hire undocumented workers, maybe contractors working for the city would? I no longer live in this general area, so I'm not sure. But I thought that this article might be of interest to you and possibly others. Sorry to the OP for the off topic.
