Alabama has risen above the national average on a widely regarded assessment of educational quality, a rare occurrence that officials hailed Thursday as showing state schools are making progress.
The state jumped from 31st place to 25th out of 51 jurisdictions in Education Week magazine's latest Quality Counts survey, which rates states on six measures of education policy and performance.

This is great for the state. Education still needs improvement though.

Hey, considering where this state used to be in terms of education, this is nothing short of miraculous. By the time it's over with, we'll erect a statue of Bob Riley, perhaps the best governor this state has ever had.

By that you mean, "Even though he enforces the laws that already exist on the books."

Default Moving to Dothan, what are the best upper grade schools?

Hi, we are moving to Dothan - Ft. Rucker area and are in desperate need of information on which are the best middle/high schools in the area. Please help! We are also thinking about private schools, but are not especially deep faith oriented. Thanks

I would recommend Enterprise or Dothan public school systems as far as towns close to Ft Rucker are concerned. For private school, Houston Academy in Dothan is outstanding. Good Luck!

The state of Alabama has a very strange way in reporting what percentage of high school students actually get a diploma. The high school I recently graduated from in Alabama, reports that very few students drop out. What they don't mention, is that they will kick a student out of school before that student drops out. With kicking the student out of school, they don't have to report that as 'dropping out' and therefore only reported 13 students in their drop out rate. In reality, nearly half the students that attended that high school never received their diplomas. The high schools in the surrounding counties are very similar, with only around 45% of students who attended receiving diplomas.

On the other hand, many schools are forced to report kids who transferred to another school as dropouts, even though they didn't actually drop out.
