Recruiters ready if VW steers this way
Officials say state would welcome another car assembly plant
Friday, October 05, 2007
DAWN KENT
News staff writer
Could yet another automaker have Alabama in its sights?

No one's saying for sure.

But if Volkswagen decides to pursue a U.S. manufacturing plant, the state expects to toss its hat into the ring, said Alabama Development Office Director Neal Wade.

Recent reports say the German automaker is considering building vehicles in the United States, where it is adopting a new strategy that includes a relocation of its headquarters and a plan to increase sales.

A U.S. plant would help Volkswagen offset the costs of importing vehicles into the country from Europe. The strong Euro and weak dollar equation has prompted other manufacturers' U.S. moves.

The Detroit News has cited speculation that centers on Alabama and South Carolina as possible sites of a Volkswagen assembly plant. Both states are home to other German automakers: Mercedes-Benz in Alabama and BMW in South Carolina.

From what I have read in some small town newspapers, efforts are still ongoing to get an automaker to locate in the new I-22 corridor. Sorry that I have nothing more specific than that.

It makes a lot of sense. Already more than 8% of all cars manufactured in the US are made in Alabama. It doesn't sound like much, but when you consider that this number was 0% ten years ago, well....

Plus with inexpensive electricity, gobs of automotive suppliers, technical training, good infrastructure, LOW TAXES, and right-to-work laws, it makes zero sense to put your plant in the rust belt.

I'm curious if U of A @ Huntsville will add an Automobile program in the near future. I know that Clemson added one a few years back and has been working with BMW. If H'ville can add that to the rocket science, partner with VW and Mercedes-Benz it might be a nice tie in for everyone.

The University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa already has a strong working relationship with Mercedes Benz......

The same is true of community colleges such as Shelton State, which focus more on technical training for workers. Given that line workers at Mercedes earn as much as 80K a year, that's not bad.

Good stuff. Maybe VW will end up in Bama, even though they said Eastern Time Zone.
