Hi Everyone, I am planning a leisurely trip up to north-central Indiana from south Florida. I really don't like driving on the busy interstates and am considering driving through Alabama (beginning at Dothan), TN, KY and into Indiana on U.S. 231. Any comments? Suggestions of places I should stop and visit while I am in Alabama?

There are several places some a little off of Hwy 231 in Hanceville, al is Shrine the Most Blessed Sacrament which is beautiful church and grounds. Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

There is also a Cathedral Caverns again not really in Huntsville but fairly close. Alabama State Parks

Huntsville.. has Marshall Space Flight Center if you are interested in getting up close. Perhaps some of the Huntsville folks can add other places to visit.

I live in Arab. Not a lot to see here but there are a couple of decent restaurants. Los Arcos on 231 or Son's BBQ is good too but as in a lot of small towns it isn't open but a few days during the week.

Lake Guntersville is 10 miles from Arab. Beautiful 69,000 acre lake surrounded by our mountains.

I would recommend cutting east before Sylacauga and checking out Cheaha Mountain State Park Alabama State Parks. You can drive up to the top of the mountain, which is the highest point in the state. There is a restaurant at the top with an amazing view, and you can also take a short hike (1/2 mile) on a wooden walkway to a beautiful overlook.

231 goes right around Montgomery. You could go into downtown Montgomery and check out some of the historical things there, the State Capitol, Dexter Ave Baptist Church, First White House of the Confederacy, etc.
