Both have pros and cons. Huntsville has a much greater diversity of people from around the country and even the world. The setting is really nice, with Monte Sano peaking higher than any of the ridges in the Birmingham area, and the Tennessee River providing nice water scenery as well.

Birmingham offers a lot more in terms of good restaurants, bars, etc. It's almost not really fair to compare the two metro areas, because they are not in the same league in terms of population and amenities.

Huntsville is almost contiguous with Decatur, so the two really have to be considered together as part of a single metro. Decatur is VERY different from The Rocket City. Old South and pretty blue collar. Along with Athens, you really can get a better taste of the "true" south seeing those two towns while in the Huntsville-Decatur area.

Mountain Brook is just a well-to-do highly segregated suburb of Birmingham...nothing more..

I would say the diversity from around the country, but not the world. UAB and healthcare sector in Birmingham makes up for the lack of diversity within the country by attracting people from the world.

In truth, if you look at the statistical data, there's not a dime's worth of difference between the two cities when it comes to diversity.
