Earlier today I looked at the property appraiser's database for Gadsden. I found a property valued at $99K whose property taxes were only $99. Compared to what I have in Florida this is absurdly low.

But, I've also found that state-county-city sales taxes in Gadsden are 10%. Does anyone know if groceries or medications in Alabama are subject to sales tax? Florida's sales taxes where I'm at are only 8%, but groceries and medications are exempt.

At this point both are subject to sales tax. Yes our property taxes are ridiculously low.

Default Do the cost of living numbers given by

City Data take taxes into account? Gadsden's cost of living is said to be less than where I'm at in Florida. I've looked at online ads for the grocery stores in the area and prices seem to be about what there were here in Florida before Biden's inflation took hold. But, adding 10% sales tax to the retail prices would erase any savings.

Do you know anything about Alabama's auto taxes? What would it cost to move in with an out-of-state car? What would the annual tag fees run?

It depends on the value of the car.

And on the county millage applied to the assessed value (20 percent of the market value of the vehicle) and the administrative charges associated with issue of the tag. Each county in Alabama has a Revenue Department or an office with a similar such name that handles issuance of tags.

It depends on where you live in the state. My property taxes (for my house) are about $2500, auto license plates for two cars are about $800. Both are low compared to other parts of the country, but not ridiculously low like the example cited.

I don't know how tag fees are determined in Florida, but basing them on the market value of the vehicle doesn't make much sense. An old car that is driven every day will put more wear and tear on the roads than a new one that spends most of its time parked would.

Florida's tag fees are as bad as our property taxes, and we also have impact fees for people who move here from other states. You never go long without seeing a business vehicle with an out of state tag, or an out of state car whose tag has expired. People come here and simply don't inform the DMV.

Where do you live and how big is your home? $2,500.00 is a steal for most parts of the country.
