The spring legislative session resulted in the Governor signing a finalize bill that will send $150:tax rebates to each individual or $300 per family/household but the checks won’t be sent until the end of November. Designed to return a tax surplus to residents, the rebate comes alongside the ever slight reduction in the state’s grocery tax.

The one time rebate will “cost” the state about $400 million as it reduces the $2.4 billion surplus sitting in the education coffers.

I'd rather have the money spent as state contribution to federal funds used to add additional north & southbound lanes to I-65 from Warrior to the state line and from south of B'Ham to as far as the funds would stretch.

Adding lanes to 65 would be a very good expenditure but I'm not sure the highway expansion is needed from Montgomery to Mobile, or at least that should be the lowest priority for 65 improvements. Last time I drove that way, which has been 4 or 5 years, there wasn't much traffic. The main bottleneck on 65 is below Birmingham (and, of course, through the B'ham metro), and some of that is due to ongoing construction. But traffic is admittedly a mess there now.

Not sure how they'll handle this tax rebate. I'm a government retiree, my wife is a retired teacher, and we don't pay any state income tax but we file a return every year just to be safe. We, of course, pay plenty of sales tax.

They said any filer gets the $150, not just those that get a refund or pay taxes.
