Recently my sister and I had the opportunity to visit Georgiana (our parents were born in the area) and saw how the town of Georgiana had basically just dried up. Does anyone know exactoy why and if there is anything that can be done to bring back a little life into the town area. We would love to see the downtown area come back with small businesses. Any suggestions?

I've been driving through/around Georgiana for 22 years between Birmingham and my hometown in the Florida panhandle. In that period of time the only change I recall was the addition of the second flashing light. Sadly, Georgiana is like a lot of small towns. No industry means no jobs, which means no reason for ambitious young people to stay. Those who do stay are often not the ones who contribute to society.

If you are a businessperson, you could base your business there and create some jobs. Other than that, I don't know that there is a lot to be done.

hi:
i live in georgiana and the only new thing thats happening here now is a new road and a new school....a new businees might last and it might not.....what i mean is this 2 dollar stores was open for a while then they closed and the ppl that was working there either moved, got another job or went on welfare.....to get this place looking "great" it would need a miracle and ppl that really want it to look like a place for out of towners to stop and shop and maybe stay a few days but thats not gonna happen with the ppl thats in office here.....all in all need jobs, houses, good roads, and the price of living here to be very low... thats what is need here.

Nothing new here except the mill at Chapman shutting down and fools going into the chicken business. So if you're unemployed, come on down and help us smell the litter, 'cause that's all we have now.

I couldn't believed that Georgiana's facing a situation like this.
Why is it dried up?

Just drove there today on the way home from Destin. Got pulled over by a city cop for going 54mph and got me a ticket. Speed zone goes from 55 to 45 to 35 and back to 55 in about one mile from Hwy 31 to I 65. They got them a nice little speedtrap down there. Gonna go to court on this one but don't expect it to help.

You can't have small businesses in a town with few or no jobs. Small businesses must make a profit to survive. If no one in the town has any money to spend with these businesses they can't survive. Perhaps some business that could draw people from elsewhere could make it. Outside of a casino I can't think of what that may be.

There is definitely a need for industry in this town. Though I've lived here for 21 years and am fast approaching 30...Yikes....I've not seen much in the way of progress. Another big problem is that people just "stay" here...mentally, I mean. There is not much sense of community in this area. I'm sure others would disagree with that statement, but that's my honest opinion.
