Wondering why country music stars Lorrie Morgan, George Jones, Marty Stuart, John Anderson, and Randy Owens are asking Alabamians to vote to approve bingo?

They're all apparently investors in a development called "Country Crossing" near Dothan. Wish they'd mention that in the commercial.

Why can't we just skip past this "bingo" crap and go straight for the lottery? Alabama is already poor so save me the argument that it exploits the poor, the damn churches are killing all the fun for the rest of us. jpatt10 - bingo is what the legislature is voting on - not the lottery.

After reading the bingo bill, it seems that it only serves to establish a bingo monopoly (or oligopoly) for a select few operators (read big money campaign contributors - Milt 'Dogtrack' McGregor and Ronnie 'Country Crossing' Gilley).

I understand a number of charities who operate bingo games are opposed, for obvious reasons.
However, a bingo place in...Walker County?...is running ads in the Decatur Daily. Part of their pitch is busing people in. I don't know if these are live games or machines.

My whole objection to gambling in Alabama is not the gambling. It's all the graft, corruption, nepotism, and cronyism that would accompany setting up a regulating agency and the politicians who would be dipping their hands into the money, or holding their hands out for it.

By the time you've bought a tank of gas in Alabama in order to drive to Tennessee/Georgia/Florida or Tunica for your lotto ticket or whatever, the state will have made as much as it would from legal gambling.

Gee, you think they may be double-dipping. I'm sure they are being compensated for their appearance in the commercial, and also are silent partners in the plan. They say they will give 20% to education, so 80% goes to them. Before you know it, alot of money comes into their pocket - and lots of money leads to greed....

I am aware of what they are voting on, and I think it is crap because of what you pointed out, it only serves to benefit a select few. I am not interested in bingo, sweepstakes machines, or electronic slots, all of those make the state sound like a safe haven for the elderly. I want to see a state sponsored lottery in which the funds are split 60-30-5-5 towards education, DOT, a new state constitution and the general fund. First of course would need to be sweeping changes throughout the state getting rid of the "good 'ol boy" crowd that has set up camp in Montgomery, there needs to be a youth movement in the state legislature, a movement that cares about the improvement of the state.
