If you're not black you may be in for a culture shock.

Well, I think Auburn/Opelika would be a better place to live. Just not a lot of amenities in Tuskeegee.

Er, social values? Not certain what you mean, but, Suggest you pay a visit BEFORE you move.

You may want to commute to from Auburn. I think there is more stuff to do there.

Default Tuskegee & biracial family

I am considering relocating to Tuskegee, AL. My family is biracial; I am white, my husband is black. Just wandering if we would be accepted. THanks in advance for any information!

I recently graduated from Tuskegee University. The majority of students who lived off campus choose to commute from Auburn simply because there are more amenities. I don't think you would have a problem with your family being bi-racial. I saw plenty of this while I was there and didn't ever see anyone commenting out in the open about it or anything. In my experience this type of racism happens more in hillbilly type towns but I could be wrong. Anyway, definitely visit before you decide because like a lot of people stated there is nothing to do there. Also do you have kids? I now have a two year old and we live in Auburn although my fiance is still attending Tuskegee for a Master's Degree program. There is hardly anything for my two year old to do here but definitely nothing at all in Tuskegee. We are moving soon and I will be so excited to be able to have a variety of things to do with her. Anyway let me know if you have any more questions!

Ditto to what's been said above. Other than the university, which is a very beautiful campus with a lot of history, Tuskegee as a city has absolutely nothing to offer in the way of amenities. Not only that, but you pay considerably more for utilities, groceries, gas, and general everyday things in Tuskegee than you do in most of the surrounding communities. Even during my college years in the 80's many professors and students commuted from Montgomery, Auburn/Opelika, and even Columbus, GA.

Don't know what race you are, and I'm not trying to make a racial issue out of this, but the City of Tuskegee is over 90% African American, Macon County about 84% African American, so if living in a city that has a lot of diversity is your thing, then Tuskegee may not be the place for you. Outside of that, it's pretty much you typical small deep south bible belt town.

Another downside is there is no hospital there. The closest hospital is 20 minutes away in Auburn.

Hope that answers your question.

Actually they did just open a small hospital there but it is kind of a joke because they close at like 6pm, lol. It is more like a doctors office really...but they call it a hospital.
