Stuff in Missery is cheap cause it's a crappy place to live. Same with Oklahoma. Most Okies are too dumb to realize that they need to learn to speak Spanish and they need to do it quick.

I did a cost analysis comparing sale ads between Anchorage and Tampa since I was moving to Tampa. I have it posted around here on CD. Anyhow, most things were pretty close (if you count 15% - 20%) close. Produce was by far the huge game changer though. On the ads I had looked at produce was something like 200+% higher in Anchorage. Buy local up there, not at the stores.

Are you saying buy local in Alaska? I'm afraid that farmer's markets seem to be higher prices then the stores. $5 for a bunch of carrots seem a bit steep to anyone besides me?

But the average income for your area is about $40,000 where as average income for Anchorage is about $65,000. Might explain a few things.

It is probably eating in restaurants that will give you the real sticker shock as opposed to other places in the U.S.,obviously it is always cheaper to eat at home. I would imagine that there are shipping food costs from Seattle that have to be passed to the consumers to the people of Alaska that tack on the cost of groceries.

The Ozarks have some of the lowest housing prices in the nation (for now...retirees are figuring out the combination of moderate weather, nice scenery, and low prices and heading your way). Anchorage housing prices aren't that far off from most cities in the -48, but it will be a shock since you're coming from somewhere so inexpensive.

If you shop wisely you can do fine here I have found. Mikes meat is reasonable as is Costco (not a fan of wal mart unless there is nothing else) and veges at Costco if you buy in bulk are a good bet and superior quality I've found.

Do any of you use the Full Circle Farms bi/weekly produce box purchase? That seemed like a pretty good deal if you were living remotely.
