I forgot one more thing....The coldest cold weather parkas that you can buy here stop at the hip...we really don't have the need for much more than that. I assume that we will all need much more substantial covering than that....can anyone reccomend a good place to shop for them? Thanks again.....

Buy them when you get up here, they'll probably be cheaper also.
North Face makes a good one.
Last fall I picked up a 130.00 coat for 60.00 from Fred Myers during the annual "oh crap it's almost snow time" sale.
If you like ordering over the internet Campmor has a huge selection.

Thank you so much...I have to admit, I'm a little intimidated by all of this. My husband is a little more adventurous than I am....I don't think he's been stressing lilke I have. I've lived in the Appalachian Mountians my entire life.....this is going to be an incredibly huge change for us. Thanks for your input, we really appreciate it!!!

Try 6th Avenue Outfitters in Anchorage, you will find everything you need to survive and enjoy the harsh winters. All at a reasonable price too.

When I first moved here, I found Internet shopping to have deals better than in stores, my favorite was REI.com (hint, check out their outlet dept)

and funny!, when you say Parka, I have to laugh to myself... I don't even own anything beyond a light sweater and I moved here from CA in 2001
