Wow, that is really scary. A little off topic but a serious question.....how mad are Alaskan drivers going to be at (me) the snow/ice driving newbie going 30 mph when we move up there? I don't want to be the cause of an accident because I am going to slow!!

You will tick off some people, but there's nothing you can do about the really crazy ones. My advice would be to stay to the right on multilane highways, and use turnouts to let others pass on two lane highways. Do that, and you will quickly gain the respect of the locals. It's the ones that crawl along passing turnouts with no inclination of pulling over that get people mad. Even worse, the ones that obliviously pass the "Delay of five or more vehicles illegal - use turnouts" signs really set people off.

The main thing is not to get forced into exceeding you comfort zone. Having a string of angry drivers behind you will add unnecessary stress and distraction. Best just to let others pass and take your time.

that will make two of us then...going slow....currently live on top of a mountain with lots of snow and ice...we both drive slow in crappy weather....we just laugh and wave at the idiots that speed by especially when we see them a mile or so down the road in the ditch !! if its a busy road an there are cars behind us... toot the horn, wave with a smile and keep going if they are standing by the vehicle and look alright....of course if it was 0 or below, children involved we stop...now a lot of times I stop, laugh at them and take a photo!!! just love the idiots that have loafers on and no socks in the dead of winter beside their ditch diving vehicle!!

At these type of temps, I alwasy stop and check to see how they are doing. Couple of times I have stopped and the driver was drunk to where they couldn't stand up, I just called the Troopers and left if it was summer, in the winter I will take them to someplace warm and drop them off, don't care to be around them but won't let them freeze to death either.

I don't have much use for Drunk Drivers, they have killed way too many people and taken a few of my friends as well as other people's family that did nothing but be in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Poor judgement is a bit farther down that list, but I will help them regardless.

Going slow isn't an issue in bad weather, what is bad is you have a line forming behind you, that is what upsets the other drivers. Just pull over and let them pass you and they will go on their Merry way at excessive speeds.

Having said that, going slow on "good" roads is an indication that the driver is drunk and is a red flag to be pulled over by the police. Course, drunks drive like bats out of hell as well!

I have less use for drunk drivers. Darwin applies.

That's exactly how I got my one and only DUI 22 yrs ago. I was going home from a party and knew I shouldn't be driving, but, you can't reason with a drunk.

Anyway, I took some back roads home to reduce the odds of getting pulled over. And to reduce the odds even more, I drove about 20 mph in a 45.

Didn't work. Got pulled over and later found out the cop became suspicious because of my slow driving.

I can honestly say I've never gotten behind the wheel again when drinking. Now I have cab companies on speed dial.

You won't be able to drive up to Alaska because of this.
