No I'm talking about the northern lights. Up north where they are intense and low...if you can get out where it's quiet...you can hear them.

Have you grown your third arm yet, Rance? I read an article about the Aurora awhile back. It is basically a form of radiation. Interesting stuff.

I'm gonna say no Karla...we won't see any. I could be wrong...but I don't think we will. And alot of it depends on the solar storms coming off the sun. Low storm activity means little or no northern lights.

I heard it is impossible to take pics of them with just an average camera.

Away from the cities (light pollution) it is the only vivid light on some nights. It is sometimes hard to see any stars against the aurora. A longer exposure will allow some fantastic pics.

My brother get's great shots through the winter. I've never tried. It's a long exposure/can't even breath type shot. Your heart beat will blur the shot!

Hello All,

Rance is correct they do sometimes crackle, though I have only herd it up north like him.

I think the best time to see the lights is mid to late September and late Feburary and early March. Something to do with the equinox? Anyway If your thinking of planning a trip to see them may I suggest comming to Fairbanks late Feburary when they are finishing the Yukon Quest and starting the Winter Ice festival. Plenty of things in town to do then and the lights usually co operate, plus you can get a taste of cold -20 or so in the evenings and still warm up in the day. Chena Hot Springs is a nice place to see them, mainly from the Rock Pool, or even just in the parking lot.
