Wow! I had nice size specimen (not even half the size you describe) wander into my camp one day just to check things out. Before I knew it, my dog was sprinting after the curious critter. The beaver just casually turned and slipped back into the Talkeetna River from whence it came. Meanwhile, my dog goes flying off the bank and into the river. She paddled about 100 yards down stream before she could find a place to climb out.

Yes, she was protecting my camp from intruders. She had never seen a beaver before, so she could not have any idea what it was. All she knew is that a strange critter suddenly appeared in her territory. I was less concerned about the beaver than I was about my dog. The beaver could have done her serious damage, where I doubt the reverse would have been true (she was not an aggressive dog, just the opposite). The beaver saw her coming even before I did, but he did not hurry or seem the least bit frightened. He just did not want to have to deal with a pesky dog, so he left the same way he came.

I would like to see a photo, if you can arrange it. I think beavers are cool critters.

Beavers can hurt dogs, especially if the confrontation happens in the water. If it's a large dog, however, and on land, the beaver stands little chance in an altercation. Much to my chagrin, my dog is a killing machine when it comes to wild animals. He went after a beaver once, which quickly slipped away into the river. He had quite a confrontation with a raccoon one dark night, and dispatched of the poor thing in short order, suffering only a very small cut on his head.
