We've basically decided that on our trip up in July that we will forego the hotel/motel route and just take an extra suitcase with camping gear. Im not having alot of luck locating campgrounds for tents. Most im finding is geared towards RV's. All we would need is a section to park our car and pitch the tent maybe if they had shower's and bathroom's as well. Anyone have any suggestions for camping locations in or around Seward, Kenai, and Homer? Those will be our stops and like I said its just for a car, not an RV. Thanks for any suggestions.

Call wherever you are looking at the campground...tell them you only need a space for a tent...they should accomodate you...I haven't seen too many tents around Kenai, but wasn't looking...I know they tent camp on the beach on the Homer spit for sure...or pull over, watch for signs though saying no camping, otherwise you should be safe...I can't remember if the Kenai beach had campers or not....

Buy a Milepost The MILEPOST: Alaska Travel Guide and Trip Planner

It will tell you if there is tent camping. Seriously, you need a milepost.

Milepost for sure. Also, try this link: Alaska State Parks Statewide Brochure

Also, in Seward there's a very nice free walk-in campground at the beginning of the road to Exit Glacier. It's a few miles up the road from town, I think. Everywhere in town is a madhouse.

Well thats something I was wondering about. Do i need to make reservations for these places? It would be kind of a hassel to have to make reservations considering we are trying to leave our calendar open in case we want to spend an extra day here or there and not knowing where we might end up. A "walk in" campground would be something id be interested in. You dont happen to know the name of it do you?

.......Important............

Where ever you decide to camp............keep any and all food out of your tent;

Keep All food in your vehicle. Do not eat in your tent.

Keep a couple of cans of BEAR SPRAY in your tent........and know how to use them.

It's just the Exit Glacier campground, as far as I know. Can't remember if it's run by the state or feds. I was there July 1st a couple years ago and there were plenty of spots available. Some other places were crowded, but I spent 12 nights camping and only made reservations for the few nights I spent in Denali NP.
