I am thinking of moving to Juneau, and notice that many state government jobs are only open to Alaska residents. If I were to move there, does anyone know if it would be easy or not to get a state government office job, such as program support or administrative assistant? I have a graduate degree in urban planning and a background working in government agencies and nonprofits. How competitive is the job market for state and local government and nonprofit jobs in Juneau? I tried applying for a couple of nonprofit jobs from 4,000 miles away but got no response. From what I see about Juneau on the internet, it looks like a great place if you're looking for a liberal-minded community-oriented type of environment, plus it's beautiful. I have lived in the Pacific NW and now I am in the humid Northeast so I'm not worried about the weather.

ok, repeat after me.." Native Hiring Preference ". It's real.

Juneau is whole other world when compared to Alaska in general. you would be better off trying Anchorage, state jobs are slowly migrating up there anyway. Juneau doesn't want to admit it, but Anchorage is the true seat of power in Alaska.
If you insist on Juneau, show up with 1 yrs income saved up. it'll last you about 7, hopefully you'll have something by then.
