Wow!! 16 to 1, I'm not sure I like that.... guess it might have it's advantages

Kids are grown and out of the house. I don't think we would try this re-location if we still had kids in the house

So, is it true? I was kinda hoping that a lack of women in the work force would be helpful to me when looking for an office job? What do you guys think?
Well, again, it really does depend on where you end up going. If you want an office job, you need to go where those jobs are located. The places with the highest concentration of office jobs also have a fairly even male/female ratio.

Exclamation Myth Debunked

People in the lower 48 always hear about the lack of women. Years ago I remember hearing it was 7-1. Although I think that has changed dramatically.

My husband has been teasing me that when we go up there, all the guys will be hitting on me. I think it's sweet for him to think that I'm still the young hottie that he married, but in truth I'm a 44 yr old woman who has had 3 kids...I'm not the "Desperate Housewife" kind of middle-aged, if you know what I mean....

No, it isn't true, and never has been true. A quick visit to the Bureau of the Census will dispell that myth quickly enough. As of July 1, 2006 Alaska's population is estimated to be 670,053, with 346,411 being male, or 51.7% of the population.

See Annual Estimates of the Population by Age and Sex for Alaska: April 1, 2000 to July 1, 2006 (http://www.census.gov/popest/states/asrh/tables/SC-EST2006-02-02.xls - broken link)

As far as the cities of Anchorage, Fairbanks, and Juneau is concerned, the male to female ratio is no different than any other lower-48 city of the same size.

Default Myth Debunkers

Like I said previously the larger populations are close, but in the smaller towns and villages the ratios go up! Bellow is an example. How would you like to be a 19 year old living in this community? 8 guys to one girl unless you chase after the under 16 crowd.

I will admit my ratio of 16 to one was an estimate, but for a non scientific experiment. Pick a online dating site and count the available men to available women for a particular age range in a zip code. that is closer to reality as some don't fill out census data. Now for fun filter out all the smokers or heavy drinkers. Think your particular and like average or better looking? Then filter out the overweight etc. On both genders. The results are informative.

Once again, the myth is not true. Salcha, Alaska, to use your example, has a population of 854 with 450 of them being males, or 52.7%. Pick any small town you like, and the RATIO remains from 1:1 to as high as 1.8 males to every female, as in the case of Adak, Alaska (population 316, 205 of them male, or 64.9%). Not even close to 7 to 1, much less 16 to 1.

Not sure an online dating site is the best place to get facts? I fill out the census, but I sure as fudge don't fill out online dating profiles.
