Consider the bus a moron magnet.

Gosh, that is a tough response to argue about!

Sean Penn made the movie.... That should pretty much answer your question of "idiot", they tend to attract one another!

A number of people have died (if I recall correctly) trying to access the bus already.

I think that Chris wasn't so moronic...at least in his ideals and views; his capabilities were obviously skewed in perhaps an arrogant manner - it cost him his life. Perhaps he wouldn't have wanted to be emulated or revered as he seems to be now. If he'd of lived...no one would be making said trek.

That being said - the ones who view this bus as a 'shrine' of some sorts or wish to be 'just like McCandless' are a bit dim; but it is human to be curious I suppose. I recall several rescues that had to be made when I resided there and talk of removing the bus. I had asked on the chat thread if it was still being used by hunters?

Bonnie - I'm with you. I am ever so glad the morning tea had been swallowed before I read Glitch's post

I think that if it is a blatant negligence such as these people have displayed, then they should have to bear some of the cost of the rescue.

I think Sean Penn should pay to have the bus towed into Fairbanks and set up as a "Don't Be An Idiot Because This Is What Happens to Idiots" memorial.

Now there's a good idea!....haul the damn thing into Fairbanks, outside city limits, so it is somewhat in the "wilderness" ....charge a fee to hike a short distance to it! though I do like the idea of culling out the Tourons (tourist/morons)

Living in a bus down by the river is special. There are folks (Glitch) who desire the safety and comforts of a city like Anchorage, while a select few prefer living off the grid in a bus down by the river.

You can admire his idealism, but if you do not marry those idealistic dreams with common sense then you are likely to end up financially ruined, dead, or both. McCandless lacked all common sense, and he paid the price for his ideals. I have no sympathy for idiots, I just hope they never reproduce.

You're quite right on all counts. I think much was taken for granted (i.e. being able to cross the river at any time without thinking of melt, etc). And that can be dangerous as well. Lack of common sense and taking matters for granted - obviously, in his case, a deadly situation.

Not so. In fact, I think we should move that bus further into the bush to ensure the hordes of morons it attracts never make it out alive. It will be a voluntary improvement of the human species over all. The more people who kill themselves doing incredibly stupid things the more it benefits all humanity.
