The US Airforce is here cleaning out the old BIA PCP dump and while they are here they tore down the old White Alice Antennae. Sad to see it go. I was in the bus when they knocked it over, but here are some before and after shots.

Bethel was a three-way tropo link between Aniak, Cape Newenham and Cape Romanzof. It was constructed during 1957 and activated on 18 January 1958. It was deactivated in 1979. Some improvements may be taken over by KYUK, the regional educational TV channel. The original equipment and power building was 6720 sf. No dormitory was needed. The one POL tank had a 6500 barrel capacity. This impressive site boasted three pairs of 60’ antennas. They faced Aniak (96 miles), Cape Romanzof (152 miles) and Cape Newenham (147 miles). All were deiced. Personnel stationed at Bethel WACS used many facilities at the nearby AC&W site.

Also quite sad in that the legacy of the cold war largely shaped our modern world as it is today, yet this is another example of how it is now being lost. Many of us spent our entire carreers in the military countering the Red Menace, while now so many of the newer generations have no idea what this threat meant to the world. I believe this is probably a major factor as to why so many, particularly the young, are so eager now to embrace Communism here at home.

Really sucks they tore it down. The whole history of the White Alice system is very interesting, and I hate to see historic things destroyed, especially for no reason.

They haven't started on demolishing it yet, it's still laying on it's front. It looks so weird out there now, plain skyline.

Yes. Though I haven't flown out that way myself, but I could definitely see how that structure could serve as a very useful navaid.

BTW, did you recognize any of those people in the second video?
