Living in Alaska is my dream. My dream job is to be a correctional officer. I currently live in Wisconsin and am getting my degree in corrections. I am aware that you have to be a resident of Alaska for two years to even apply for a job in corrections up there (WHY!!!????). So my real question is, how do I go about becoming a resident of Alaska, and then what the heck am I suppose to do for two years?

Residency for the job may only mean that you live here, have an Alaska Drivers license and local address. You may have to prove that somehow.

Residency for the Alaska PFD means that you have to live here for a complete calendar year...Jan through dec I believe.

Residency for hunting and fishing means that you have lived here for a complete year.

This info is only as I remember. You should check to make sure I'm right.

You could work at Walmart in the morning and McDonalds in the evenings. Then after a few months maybe apply at one of the security companies for a graveyard shift job. I've never heard of anyone actually wanting to work in the jail. Most of the time the only way to tell the difference between an inmate and a jailer is by the color of the uniform.

DOC has been hiring. They've got a booth at the fair trying to recruit. They are about to open up the Goose Creek Correctional Facility...
Are you sure about the two year thing? I don't see that on their website: DOC Recruitment
Otherwise, it seems like I often see jobs advertised for security guards. Or drive school bus. It pays good and you'll get to meet a bunch of future inmates.

what?? there have been OP in the past asking this question and some have secured a job in the "jail"...called a corrections facility now....the corrections facility in Kenai advertises job openings a couple times a year...have friends that have been "jail" correction officers for year and retired from position....some just can't (cut it) make it though or even get in! they usually go out on a lame permanent injury claim

Alaska residency for State of Alaska jobs does not require one or two years. Alaska residency is established by taking the steps to show that you intend to make this your home. Get a DL, register to vote, register your vehicles, etc. Different rules apply for perm fund, hunt/fish license etc.

I wasn't cut out for being a CO. I did it for a year. Being locked up for 12 hours per shift with perverts, child molesters and wife beaters wasn't my cup of tea.
