The biggest differences are the temperature, the visibility problems from blowing snow, and that the wind here scours all the ice on the sidewalks and driveways until it's nice and shiny, which makes walking around kind of a pain even when the wind dies down.

Yes, I am in the panhandle, where it seems the wind blows nearly year 'round. The only difference I can see between the SNOW blowing around, and the SAND blowing around...... are the clothes you are wearing during the suffering....

How about the people there? Since you are from Tx, you understand Texas friendly. Have you run into the same in your Alaska travels? Having great neighbors in town makes the weather related suffering a whole lot more enjoyable. The people down here are the second reason behind me not uprooting and venturing out into the world.

Job is the first, of course.

Yeah, people tend to be friendly. There are some really interesting people living interesting lives up here. And in a way, it feels almost like a military town does, because people are from all sorts of places and most everyone's families are pretty far away, and there's a sense that everyone's in it together, so you'll make friends that are more like family here.

Get out now while you can! Texas and Oklahoma are soon gonna be given back to Mexico. I was just recently down there and that whole part of the country is being overrun by illegal aliens. It's really strange to go into a McDonalds down there and not have any of the counter people understand English. I finally just gave up and left.

Didn't mean to offend. Just called it as I saw it. It's just weird to go on a driving trip to the lower 48 and you can almost see parts of the country where the illegals have taken over. I have a buddy that's a police officer in a small suburb of Oklahoma City. He says the largest problems with illegals is that they don't have drivers licenses or automobile insurance. If you're in an auto accident with one you're just poop out of luck. Big, big problem down there and growing larger.

That's what uninsured motorist coverage is for. Amazingly, it even covers you if an uninsured US citizen hits you. Btw, Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed4.6% of the population isn't exactly "taking over." Mexican culture is an important component of Texas culture. If you can't get that, or you don't like that, then it's certainly not the place for you. But this thread isn't in the Texas forum or the Politics forum, so maybe there's a better place for your rant.

Then why do I have to pay for insurance if you're covered? Unfortunately if your poor like me and drive an older vehicle with only liability insurance then you're out of luck. In that case uninsured motorist coverage will only cover your medical bills not your vehicle damage.

I had that experience in Anchorage of all places. My beloved 1992 Dodge Shadow was rear ended by an illegal that had didn't have a DL or insurance. The only thing my uninsured motorist insurance paid for was my medical bills. My car totaled. I could not even get scrap prices for it. No way to collect from him either.

Sorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread. Rant off.

I will say I did really like the Cadillac Ranch and The Big Texan Steakhouse in Amarillo.

There's a difference between Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Bodily Injury Coverage and Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist Property Damage Coverage. My policy with Progressive covers both. You should talk to your insurance agent and update your coverage. And there's no reason not to have full coverage on an older vehicle. I have full coverage on a 13-year-old truck that cost $5000. Heck, I only have a $100 comprehensive deductible! It costs next to nothing to insure the thing, and I certainly can't afford to replace it out of pocket, so full coverage makes a lot of sense.

The winter's are too dark and cold. The Alaska State Fair is the same as 10 years ago, except it's 800% more expensive, 200% more expensive than Disney World. I want to have access to organic grocery stores that don't cost a fortune and great authentic ethnic food. Unless you work for the government or oil industry, good jobs are very limited. You can only fish so much before you want more things to do. There's lots of reasons for me moving, but I have nothing against Alaska. It's still a great place in my mind, I just don't want to live here anymore. I'm bored and cold.
