So my wife and I are planning a trip to see Alaska in its winter beauty and were pricing out car rentals. We were surprised that a rental in Kenai runs no less than $125/day for the most compact...which is more than the nightly hotel stay. We were expecting the usual $30-40/day.

If rentals are that high, are taxis less expensive?

Is the high rental cost due to the wear and tear of winter driving on the car?

For $125/day, I might as well find someone that will drive us around and give us a tour!

Thanks for the advice!

When are you going?

I checked from Dec. 23 - Dec. 31 avis it is was fairly normal... $259 for a standard car and then + all the normal surcharges which brings it to $330. With tax that comes to about $41.25 per day.

Maybe it's because you are trying to rent the car in Kenai. May of those small town rental outfits are quite expensive. Just rent in Anchorage and drive there.

$198 a week
Travelocity.com: Error Page

Also try calling, not alot of rental in the winter. If your going to Kenai it's not really worth getting a car in ANC and driving back, super nice drive as long as there's no storms.

How is it to drive the road from Anchorage to Kenai in the winter? Is it kept pretty clear of snow?

It's typically completely drivable. You may encounter some icy patches, so watch your speed. If there happens to be a big snow storm, it might be slowing going.

But people drive it all the time. Just make sure the car is in good shape, you are dressed accordingly & you've got plenty of gas.

LOL. No big deal! Better to think you are over-paying than under-paying.... No sticker shock then!

Right now the roads are almost completely dry. It would really depend upon you showing up after a recent snowfall. But of course that is unpredictable.

There are plenty of rental companies in ANC that can rent you a 4WD with studded snow tires. The drive from here to Kenai is quite spectacular this time of year!

You need to make sure that the car has snow tires on it, lot of them run summer tires year round and you go into the ditch, even if the tires are wrong, it's your dime....
