Ok I think this is the last of the back dated photo's. These are just flare pictures. We don't know their offical names for each style, so we made up our own names....

The "Olymic Torch". Single horizontal flare that sits very high off the ground. This is at Flow 1. There just happens to be 2 next to each other in this photo but their usually sitting alone. The one on the left has a normal size flame... The one on the right was over a couple hundred feet high due to several drill sites shutting down that day and the extra gas venting through it. Drill site 1 - the semi look alike is waaaay off in the back ground.

Birthday Flares - all lined up pretty, like on a birthday cake.

More birthday candles. But the one to the left that is horizontal we refer to as a cannon flare.

There neat to see at night up there. The birthday flares were always my favorite though.

Been here in Kuparuk since late 80's. I prefer working across Cook Inlet but the work is/was here.

About 3 AM this morning. Was a little windy and the truck rocked a touch with the window mount...

Is that a meteor?

This one had some good pink along the bottom...but those darn lights and the wind pretty much ruined the picture

The orange glow is the overhead pad lights on the snow...looks rediculous

Rance,
What settings do you find work the best for capturing the Northern Lights? Seems like using a shutter speed that's fast as possible would be the best way to go? Looks like what you're going with are pretty close to dead on.

I was at ISO 400, F/3.5, these were 25 second exposures. Would have liked to have more time to play with settings but I had work to do...and after the last two were taken, I said to heck with it and drove down the road to a dark spot. The lights went ballistic...and my battery went dead! I haven't cussed that much in years. Next on my shopping list...spare battery!

I think it was Floyd mentioned trying to bump the ISO up to like 800 or more? I'd like to play with some other settings...just never seem to get the time.

Just great Rance
It does look like a meteor in the first one.

From what I have read, they recommend using ISO 400 F/4 and between 3 and 10 sec exposure.
I haven't had a chance to try these settings out though.
