Alone in the Wilderness" is on PBS again! I've seen this show a couple times already, but I can watch it again and again!

I have never seen 'Alone in the Wilderness', but I am curious if they mention that Dick Proenneke stayed in his friend's cabin while he built his own cabin over a two year period. If they do not at least mention that fact, they are deliberately trying to mislead people.

I've seen it many times, and yes they do make a mention of this.

Yep, they mention he stayed in his friends cabin. It's a good video.

Well would like to see that!

My cabin is very much "Alone", and I rather enjoy the time there! Have to fix the snowmachine and then will make a trip out last week of March!

That is a good thing. At least people will have some kind of idea of what Mr. Proenneke had to do to finish his cabin. I would hate to give people the impression that you can show up some Spring, slap up a cabin during the Summer, and be ready to face the coming Winter. That is how we end up with idiots like McCandless.

It is a lot of hard work, particularly if you are going to build a cabin by yourself. I have nothing but respect for Mr. Proenneke. He demonstrates that with careful planning, hard work, and perseverance one can achieve their pursuit of happiness.

Amen Glitch. It looked like alot of work, but very satisfying work.

When I watched it, I thought the program did a good job of showing that he has support from a friend with a plane. He would fly supplies in for him and check on him.

IIRC, didn't it take him a couple of years to get the cabin to the point he could move in?

I own Alone in the Wilderness on DVD. Dick Proenneke was the embodiment of the Alaskan spirit. If you get a chance, pick up a copy of the book with the same title. Dick Proenneke kept a journal which many entries are published in the book with some more pictures.
