Hi everyone, I was wondering if anyone here could tell me about Dune Lake if you have ever been there or know the area. I understand a fire happened in '09 so am curious how the re-growth is coming along.

Why I'm asking is because I was looking at land there and will be trying to make it out there in June.

I was also wondering about access to the lake, I am planning on either bringing an inflatable raft with a motor and heading up the Tek river and then hiking 9 miles or bring a smaller kayak and leaving my car at Nenana and just crossing the river and then hiking 25 or so miles to the lake. How do these ideas sound?

I appreciate all feedback and enjoy this forum.

Since you are like me with no experience in the area. I would get a sat phone or at least a SPOT transmitter and let people know of your plans and dates... Makes it easier for the first responders should something happen. Find out about wildlife and how to handle them as well...

Things like, extreme lower 48 survivalists have vanished come to mind and I know they thought they were truly prepared.

I am leaving out all of the preparations that I am sure you have already made... (Food/water, clothing, firearms, etc...) You are in good health...

Everything else about the area has to come from someone else...

It only takes money and a float plane.
Please don't even think about portaging 9 miles !

Thanks for the replies, I would be as prepared as possible of course. I might consider the float plane, about how much does that usually cost?

Well by what I can tell it may vary... but google search Alaska Air charters and you will get a nice list. Most have phone numbers to call so it must depend on gear, weight, how many etc.... When I was in Sore Finger bay off of Admiralty it cost 600 dollars from Juneau to sore finger with 2 bags and rifles/amunition (wasn't my flight but that was what I was told)

Most charters are priced by the hour. Nowadays they start at about $300/hour depending on the plane.

You might just want to buy Marks cabin. It's in the same basic area and is already up. You are going to spend at least as much as he is asking to build there. At least I think he still wants to sell it. It's o.n Totek Lake just south of Dune Lake.

either way you are going to fly in during the summer and snowmachine in during the winter.

Thanks all. I got some quotes for the flight, I may end up doing that, but knowing me and since I can hike all day long I might just see if its possible to get there, or fly in and see if I can hike out. Right now my major concern is leaving my car somewhere, maybe it is fine to just leave it in an out of the way place and hope no one vandalizes it. If I was to have a cabin out there one day I would have to find a nice place to leave the vehicle. Any suggestions on that?

It isn't like hiking in other places. It's pretty much swampland during the summer out there.
