...june 2013 in alaska...
...one of the warmest of record...

much of alaska experienced some of the warmest weather of record in june.
The only exceptions were bering sea coastal areas from the seward peninsula
south to the alaska peninsula...where temperatures...while above normal
overall...were not in the top ten warmest for the month.

Most outstanding was the extreme heat mid-month over portions of southern and
western alaska. Several locations with observations extending back more than 70
years broke all-time record highs...including 96 degrees at talkeetna...
94 degrees at mcgrath and 90 degrees at both cordova and valdez. At
bethel...the high of 88 degrees on the 18th is the second highest temperature
of record in more than 90 years of observations. On the 19th nome tied
the all-time record high of 86 degrees. At juneau...the high temperature
of 85 degrees on the 16th was the warmest temperature in the
capital city since june 2004.

The last week of the month was especially warm in the interior. At fairbanks...
The low temperature of 70 degrees on the 25th may be the highest reliable
calendar day low temperature ever recorded in alaska. The average temperature
at the fairbanks airport for the week of june 23 to 29th of 74.8f is
the warmest week ever at fairbanks and may be the warmest week of record
at any location in alaska.

Preliminary data shows the following rankings for average temperatures
for june:

Barrow...39.0f warmest since weather bureau observations began in 1920.
Juneau airport...57.9f is second warmest.
Fairbanks...66.8f is third warmest
anchorage...58.9f third warmest of record
kodiak...53.8f fourth warmest and warmest since 1953.

Rainfall across alaska...while below normal in many places..was generally
not in the lowest ten.

The unusually warm weather was the result of stagnant high pressure
aloft centered over the state. The pattern is in the process of changing
and persistent extreme warmth is not expected in alaska during july.

Note...the above listed temperatures have been carefully checked but
are preliminary and subject to final quality control...which in a few
cases may change the rankings.

received for the rest of the month. No rain fell between june 5th and

june 30th...leading to 26 days of no measurable precipitation in

august).
