They are bad everywhere. I've live in Southeast, Southwest, Southcentral and Interior Alaska and all of 'em had one thing in commons. Mosquitoes.

No, it was taken up at Kavik River Camp on the north slope.

There's just no place to go to get away from mosquitos... You would have figured that the arctic circle would be mosquito free, but apparently not.

Oh gosh no, they are terrible up there with nothing but moist tundra to breed in. You can see more, including an airplane FULL of mosquitoes on my trip report up there to visit my friend Susan Aikens for her birthday.

The worse mosquitos I have ever been in was the coastal plain of ANWAR. I was hunting with freinds from Kaktovik.

We were traveling on the Arctic Ocean east Kaktovik by boat when we saw a herd of caribou on shore that seemed to be acting strange . When we got closer the caribou were running madly around in circles in and out of the water. There was a huge cloud of mosquitoes all around them. We beached the boat with the intent to catch some of the caribou. The two guys that stalked the 'boos came running back jumped in the boat yelling "LETS GO, GET OUT OF HERE, GO, GO, GO!" Well we did not go fast enough and the cloud of mosquitoes caught up with us and even managed to keep up with us for a while.

Even Juneau and Homer?

They aren't so bad if you live near the coast, assuming there is regular wind.

Yes, even in Juneau or Homer. Unless the wind is blowing, which would probably be the case on the spit in Homer, but not as likely if you were hiking somewhere in the woods.

But it's not like just walking down the street there's a cloud of 'em sucking you dry. You can go to the store without spraying on bug dope. But if you going to be out in the yard, on a hike, fishing along a stream, keep the spray handy.

They weren't very bad in Wrangell, they weren't too bad on the Seward Peninsula (unless you went inland), and they aren't bad here on the Kenai (again, worse if you go inland).

We went on the Skilak Lookout hike this summer and it was pretty awful with bugs. I guess I just need to stay near the coast...
