This thread would make a great sticky.

Like I already told you, they'll give you a voucher for your 5K which you'll get in Alaskan currency. Here's a little tip, though: The border agents won't automatically offer you the voucher. You need to be sure to ask for it, and if they seem hesitant, be firm with them.

I got mine in beads and beaver pelts.

If Alaska is an island off of Arizona, then where did I go when I thought I went to Alaska?

Hog,

Nice looking beaver.

And the beads are nice too. Not exactly sure what the beads are though.

They won't hand you cash at the border, however. This would just create a situation where border patrols would become targets of crime due to having large amounts of cash in their stations. They will stamp your passport and issue you the necessary paperwork for getting your 5K. You'll need to set up an account with an Alaskan bank, though, and you'll receive your 5K in Alaskan currency via direct deposit.

That was really funny.

Oh dear. Well, we are also moving to Alaska. Yes, you need a passport, but only one passport because, well...that is all anyone ever needs to leave/re-enter the US (of which Alaska AND Hawaii are part, but not of the 'lower contiguous 48 states' (aka they are attached).
No, they do not give you money upon entering Alaska. Methinks someone was pulling your leg.

If you are wondering about the permanent dividend fund, after living in Alaska for one FULL year, beginning January 1st, you may apply for the dividend which is then disbursed the following October. I will add, though, that my research seems to indicate that it really is for people who plan to be permanent residents.
So, if we move in March2014, the full year will start in 2015 and we would not get a dividend until 2016, so...they do not just throw money at you. You have to really, truly live there.

Best of luck to you!

Hogfamily, that is hilarious.

Tried to rep you but got the message I needed to 'spread the wealth' first.

NOW I know where I was--and that explains the music I kept hearing.

You are correct in that there are other issues then just being here for one to qualify.
