Since I have been here longer in San Diego than I originally intended (most reasons very good) I wanted to ask what it takes to maintain residency in Alaska. Not for the pfd but car registration drivers license etc. I own a home in Alaska which is currently rented.

Thanks

My understanding is as long as you don't claim residency or the benefits of residency in another state, you are fine.

For the pfd you can't be gone longer then 3 months unless for medical reasons.

Here is the Alaska statute for your answer; 15 AAC 23.143. Establishing and maintaining Alaska residency

A little trickier than that. California is going to be upset that you haven't moved your car to California plates. The reason is tax money. I am almost positive that AK auto and license plate renewals are cheaper than in California.

You might be breaking California law. A lot of it depends on how many days a year you are staying in which state. My current neighbor spent a lot of time in California when he lived in Nevada. He used to get stopped by the police and hassled all the time. He kept copies of his electric and water bill in his car. Nothing they could do, since he owned a house in Nevada and didn't own one in California. The business he worked for had offices in Nevada and California, so at times he had to spend time in California.

If you go back to AK on a regular basis and spend time in AK - then you should be OK, providing you can prove it. Paying utility bills in your name helps to prove it.

I think that if you're living, working, and driving somewhere, you're legally obligated to change your plates and your DL to that of the state in which you're living in, unless it's a temp. job that has a clear end date.

Met - Even that is debatable. Some temp jobs last years. Heck we have a contracted/temp employee at work that has 14 years on. His original contract was for 1 year. Most of our contractors move here for the length of the contract and change plates. Granted, we do license and background checks and if they are not following the law we show them the door. A few leave the family "at home" and fly-in every week, stay at a Hotel here, and on the weekend go back home. In that case, the person hasn't "moved" to Florida. Even though they might have driven their car here and rented an extended stay type place. They just work here temporarily. Some work for us part-time while working in other states part time too. Everything depends on a persons unique situation. A large portion of the have you moved or not, is are you spending more than 6 months of the year in your "temp job" or visit. It is why college students that go out of state, end up having to get new DL's and plates in the state they are going to school in. Even though "home" is not there.

You should be OK if you are maintaining residency in another state while working/staying somewhere else temporarily. Maintaining another residence meaning, paying the mortgage/rent/upkeep/utilities on your 'permanent' house in another state. Not renting it out. If all your stuff is with you, sorry, you've moved. If you brought tools for the temp job with some personal effects, you haven't moved. If your stuff "back home" is in a storage locker, you've moved.
