Its funny to hear my friends and family down south to freak out because its supposed to get to 0F.
At least its supposed to only last a few days. It seems like all the cold air that would usually be in Alaska is being pushed down into the lower 48.

I use to live in St. Paul when I attended the University of Minnesota. As I recall, -20°F for a few days was the norm for St. Paul in January.

Jersery girl here and I remember very cold winters growing up, but for the last 25 or so years it has been warm...until this winter. Reminds me of my childhood and snow days!

There is a very good reason for why we are experiencing similar temperatures to what we experienced 30 years ago. We are moving into another global cooling cycle.

According to NASA's global temperature data since 1880, we have been experiencing 35-year cooling cycles, followed by 30-year warming cycles. Over the 130 year period there was a total overall increase of 0.80°C, and a total overall decrease of 0.29°C, which leaves a net overall increase of 0.51°C.



1880-1915 : 35-year Cooling Cycle
1915-1945 : 30-year Warming Cycle
1945-1980 : 35-year Cooling Cycle
1980-2010 : 30-year Warming Cycle

Therefore, if the trend continues, we are looking at another cooling cycle from 2010-2045. Based upon the above data we can expect a total overall increase of 0.20°C, and a total overall decrease of 0.145°C, leaving an overall net increase of 0.055°C by the year 2045.

The kids still go out for recess here down to -20F.
