Here's what's happening here:

It's been above freezing for 10 days and raining for over a week. The snow is wrecked and every paved surface is covered in several inches of glare ice. Today two avalanches closed the road. One, at the north end of Keystone Canyon, in a gully called Snowslide Gulch, is reportedly 30 feet deep and 600 feet wide across the road. It's too dangerous for the DOT crew to start clearing it, so they're sitting tight for now. The road is expected to be closed for at least 24 hours, but I expect longer. That avalanche has also dammed the Lowe River, and we're getting a flash flood watch in anticipation of the snow dam breaking. The forecast is calling for a break over the weekend, perhaps more rain Monday and Tuesday, then a cooler clearing pattern. We can only hope.

Edit: And now they're apparently evacuating the neighborhood just south of the canyon, which is right next to the river and fairly prone to flooding.

Keep us informed. I hope that that area doesn't flood.
