I like the idea of removing wet clothes and covering up in the warm sand. Even what little body heat he had left would soon warm the sand around him enough to reduce heat loss and keep one alive I think.

After all the dumb things he'd done up to that point I was really impressed he'd thought to do that too! Once out of the icy water that sand felt like a warm blanket. It saved him from hypothermia for sure and perhaps worse.

Glad to know he is safe. A good thing about it is that he now has an out of the ordinary lifetime experience that hopefully will stop him from doing the same things the next time.
