I have Verizon and have no trouble here and have had it for years. And it is 3G service. And we also have GCI which is the service here and all over Alaska for internet service, it is fast and works just fine. And its not a "satellite" connection. We are considered "rural" here in Sitka. Yakutat is not too far as the crow flies from here! Good luck Brittany!

Wow.

I don't think that there is anyone here who actually lives in Yakutat, but...

I've never had much of a problem finding a wifi spot in "rural" Alaska, and I've seen a lot of it, so I'm guessing that there may be a cafe, coffee shop, or other business in Yakutat that offers that service. I think that's what the OP was asking about anyway rather than different Internet companies. With all the tourism and seasonal employment that goes on there, surely someone's capitalized on visitors' needs for Internet service. I'm sure you'll find something, Brittany.

Haven't been there but Glacier Bear Lodge probably has wifi--they do have a restaurant there. Looked into doing some fishing there recently.

These are good to know things. It sure didn't seem that way when I was in small towns. Unless I was paying to stay at a hotel we didn't have squat in 2012. I had a verizon and an ATT phone (iPads and a hotspots too) and most of the times both were out of cell phone and data. Data when I got it was 2G (or EVDO in verizon speak). This was even going in and around Anchorage - but it does seem that alot of upgrades have been put it. And I have read some articles about that as well.

I guess your experience may vary. I'll be checking it out again here shortly.

Yakutat probably won't have the type of hotspot you're typing about, Dak. What they're likely to have is a cafe or other small business that lets customers use their wifi. I've seen this all over -- some charge, some don't. Back in 2005, you could use the computers in the health food store in Talkeetna for $15 an hour (not sure if they were wifi). In Craig, you can go to the Whale's Tail.

Glacier Bear wifi was down last time I was there.

I don't think I had any cell service at all there either.
