For those of you with kids, where do you get your winter coats and what brands do you buy?

I have checked Big Ray's website a few times, but it looks like it is still spring/summer stuff that is up. The only stuff I find that is warm enough for the North Slope for kids is Canada Goose and wow....that is a lot to spend on a coat that could only last one year if a kid does a lot of growing!

The coats I sent to the village with my girls aren't good enough for the entire winter. I knew that when I packed them, but I still cannot find anything warm enough for them. Is it still too early to be looking?

There are soooooo many warm adult coats available, but very few kids!

Thanks, Warpt. I should have said I checked there too. I got my husband, myself and my oldest daughter(she can wear adult S) coats there. I will call them and see if they have all of their kids stuff up.

Army Navy usually has good stuff. You can buy Columbia and the like at Fred Meyer.

Where are you? Because the weather in the Interior demands a higher quality coat then the coast around Anchorage.

I am buying for up near Barrow for the younger two.

I did get my oldest and myself coats for next year at the village, so I figure we will be really warm this year in Anchorage. Since she needed a new coat and is almost done growing, it made no sense to buy a coat for Anchorage this year and another new coat next year. I can fill in the rest of our winter wardrobe with our Minnesota stuff. I figure that stuff should work in Anchorage, if it keeps us warm when we are at the cabin in northern MN.

I will check out Army Navy. Thanks!

Default Winter clothing.

Check out Value Village when you get to Anchorage we get much of our kids stuff there. We always find new or nearly new clothing including winter gear; coats, parkas, and snow pants. Most are name brand. Prices are one fourth or less than when they were in a regular store. We just bought a Coast Guard Parka for our 13 y/o that is nearly new for $14. A comparable new civilian parka would be over $100. As a bonus we even occasionally find money in pockets once a $20. When we go with our kids they go through all the pockets in the clothing. They have found quite a bit of cash. They give all they find to charity.

You do not necessarily need down a good quality synthetic is just as good. Getting the parka a little too big will allow you to layer. Don’t worry about being fashionable anything that keeps you warm is in fashion in the village.

Big Rays, Active8 brand. They aren't on their website. They are just super awesome for kids and they will out grow them before they wear them out! They don't cost an arm and a leg either. They have features that you don't even know you need until they are wearing them out in the snow and cold.
