Guaranteed. All them boys who used to spend summers with me grew up, joined the Marines, got married etc. It's lonesome around here, no need for a huge garden and flocks of chickens so I'll come visit for sure!

Those spuds you sent were one of my favorite things about the last summer I was there. I'd grab one or two in the morning, chop them up with some garlic and green onions and saute them in grapeseed oil for breakfast.

Colorado is surrounded by other states, we're not.
And they do get a lot of business from the surrounding states. Our population is much smaller and a lot of us have no interest in being potheads. Don't look for marijuana to bail us out of our current fiscal situation.

A significant number of Colorado's canna tourists fly in from all over the world. Personally, I'm not interested in providing budget services for people who might drive in if they could...and I certainly wouldn't count on local people for business.

...the people who are making money with canna tourism in Colorado are the ones who combine it with something else. The Colorado Symphony, for instance, sponsors canna friendly outdoor concerts under the stars. Little BnB places with organic gardens and that sort of thing that appeals to upper-class travelers....

Vacation rentals book up quickly in most parts of Alaska as it is. Throw a canna friendly ambiance into the mix, and they'll be even more demand.

But you're right -- cannabis won't bail Alaska out of its current mess (personally, I think the only thing that's going to significantly help is if a lot of people dependent on the oil and gas industry hit the highway and if the state enacts an income tax that includes seasonal workers as well as gets rid of the dividend payments), but it might provide innovative entrepreneurs with opportunities. Just because Alaska voted to legalize recreational use doesn't mean that it's automatically acceptable in all venues. Lodging establishments have as much right to ban smoking of any kind on their property as they ever did. There's money to be made in canna tourism if you appeal to the right market. I'm not talking about retail sales but rather providing a vacation experience where guests are welcome to indulge and are willing to pay for the ability to do so in a no-hassle environment.

ETA is that all I said is that it's a possible partial answer to the state's financial problems, not that it was going to bail the state out after decades of oil dependency.

I believe I read an article related to the pot business saying the owner/operators have to be residents of the state to run a business. I have no opinion on the whole subject cause I just don't care either way. Stupid drunks, dumb potheads..all the same except dumb potheads that think they overdosed aren't as violent in the E.D. as stupid drunks!

My business partner is a resident of the state. That's probably a good rule, though -- too bad Alaska doesn't have the same requirement for those jewelry stores in the port cities. I think they tried that once and it was ruled unconstitutional. The same thing will probably happen this time. Anyway, our place in SE a does all right, and I doubt we'll be turning it into a canna resort anytime soon unless the salmon stop running, but I can see that there might be opportunities. It's working pretty well in Colorado. I imagine the dumb potheads will simply keep growing their own the way they have been since before statehood anyway; nothing will change in that respect, but there might be some money in tourism. I don't use it myself because I dislike any kind of smoke but it's been my observation that there are people who use it responsibly. I have to say that I'm not all that crazy about the idea of edibles, though, especially considering the extremely poor quality of available healthcare.

Thanks, Dak. I'll only be around to facilitate the transfer to the next generation. I like my life in Oregon and have no need or desire to return to Alaska beyond three or four months per year.

Anything I typed about capitalizing on canna was an attempt to add some levity to a stressful situation, but I wouldn't expect most people here to know that about me. Running a potshop ain't on my agenda.

My mother passed away this morning in a hospice home six months after being told -- repeatedly -- by so called healthcare professionals both in Ketchikan and on the island that nothing was wrong with her.

Very sorry to hear that your mother passed Met. And that the medical care in Alaska did a dis-service to her and you.
