I'd really like to get to Alaska this year. I have been to 49 states so would be nice to check it off.

I don't really have the time or money to do it properly, I really just want to get my feet on the ground for a few days, see some stuff, meet some people.

I see there are ferries out of Washington, but they are no bargain. Are there any other options?

I've been to Alaska 5 times. Driven 3 times, flown 2 times. Flying is quicker, but for a family of 5 out of Seattle it cost me about $3400, plus another $200 to get to Seattle. Driving is definitely cheaper for 5 people, but it takes a couple of weeks round trip. If you're going by yourself, flying might be the cheapest option. Taking the ferry is definitely the most expensive, especially if you take your car.

Easiest and cheapest is to fly.
Jet Blue has had some really cheap fares. We got round trip to Portland for about $200 a while back.

If you are planning to fly to Hawaii, you might consider flying to Anchorage for your connecting flight. As I recall, flights out of Anchorage, Seattle, Portland and Los Angeles are within 30 minutes of each other, so they are roughly the same distance away from Hawaii. Just plan a layover for a few days.

For one person, flying hands down is the cheapest...

Book in advance, sometimes you just need 2 weeks or so and you can get some decent flights. I've flown JetBlue, Alaska Airlines, and Delta. I shop them all.

Canoe is pretty cheap as well. Takes a while though.

Yeah that's how I want to do it when I get the time! As a former OTR driver that's how I have seen most of the country. I'd like to travel the Top of the World Highway at some point also.

So I will be in Seattle in April, I might start looking at flights. I'm thinking Seattle - Juneau will be the cheapest/quickest/best option - does that sound right?

Or Seattle to Anchorage. Flight prices don't make sense to me. I can fly from Miami to Anchorage cheaper than from Seattle at times... Check them all... Also, occasionally Alaska Airlines runs specials.

I've driven the Top of the World Highway... It is a neat drive. You can also see Dawson City... And use a Ferry to cross the Yukon River (which the last time I checked was free).
