I got all kinds of different answers and just decided to wait until I flew up to take my hand guns. One shop in Anchorage said without an AK ID I had to wait 90 days to pick my guns up. I wasn't worried as my wife who is co owner of the guns already was an AK resident and had an AK DL... Which negated that waiting period. Both the sending FFL's and the receiving FFLs told me that transfer paperwork to ATF was done at each end. I don't care, but a lot of people do. Something about not wanting the government to know about your guns. They already know about mine since I purchased all of mine during my lifetime and those forms were filled out as the new purchaser.

Even my relatively low number of guns were going to cost more money than a roundtrip ticket to send and get.. So even if I was just going back to get my guns, I'd rather do it that way.

I agree with Met n the prince Rupert reasoning. Ferry from Bellingham up was cost prohibitive.

Yes we have done estimates on taking ferry out of US to sitka, and its looking like driving through canada is much cheaper.

What about barging? IT should cost around $2500 from SEA. You'd have to fly, but when you factor in time and gas money...might be reasonable (though I have no idea what a ferry cost).

Their least expensive option is driving to PR and taking a ferry from there.

There is a DMV here. Post Office number907) 747-3381. Local gun store(sporting good store) is Orions (907) 747-3541. Several years ago I mail guns to me thru the local ffl to an ffl in Anchorage. There was no ATF crap or anything else. Quite simple. I seem to remember someone talking about a 50 buck per gun to pick up at the ffl here but that might not be correct. If you are thinking of the ferry, their number is: 800-642-0066. The sooner you get a reservation, the better especially when bringing a vehicle. Ferry from down south comes in once a week on Tues. Just spoke to a fellow yesterday off the ferry(he was lost, so to speak) and he said he had a heck of time getting a reservation and it only gets worse when the snow birds return come spring. Oh, you have to take the written drivers license test, in person to get a license here. If you are moving to Sitka, good idea to bring some ammo with you. .22 shells can run 60-70 bucks a brick(500 rounds) here and that is not at the store cause they have none. I shoot a .300 RUM and can't get that ammo here. I bought 250 rounds a few years ago though. .243, .270, 30-06 ammo is available. Their stock at the store fluctuates.

Another wise word-just because you get your Alaska drivers license doesn't make you a resident in terms of fishing/hunting licenses. You got to be here a year to get resident licenses. People try that trick all the time and the sporting good stores don't check your residency, they aren't cops. But Fish and Game WILL catch up to you. Happens all the time and they don't take kindly to that game. Neither do residents.

Oh yes of course. As great as it will be to get the perks of being a resident in Alaska, it is not worth it for either of us to loose our hunting or fishing licenses!!

mtnlvr11--do you where this gun shop is suppose to open in Sitka? I've heard nothing about it. We don't gave a gunsmith here and it would be great to have.

I believe it will be at the north end of town, Halibut Point Rd.? My apologies if that is too vague. Construction of the shop will be starting soon, and is expecting to be open September 1st of this year! It will also be providing light metal fabrication in addition to its gunsmithing services.
