People ask me and my DH why he decided to "retire" to a village in the interior, where gas is almost $8 a gallon, milk is $14 and most other groceries are more than double what most people pay (when you can find it). It is because he wanted to live in the woods and we can afford it now. Housing in this place is hard to find for any more than 2 or 3 people. Same with a job, although right now there are 3 decent open jobs here. We built our house here, it is less than 400 square feet. We heat with wood and have no indoor plumbing because we didn't want to pay the $15,000 to run the water line to our house at the time, and we have no plans to. There is a laundromat 1/2 mile away where we take showers and do laundry. Our mode of transportation depending on where you want to go is a snowmachine, 4-wheeler, boat, or bicycle. All of our meat is wild. We have had experiences that most people don't have. And it has been a wild ride.

One day I hope to end up where you guys are. Love that little village.

If you want to move to Nome you can find housing. You have to be there to do it though. Lots of it is advertised via word of mouth or a note on the various bulletin boards around town. It's there but you gotta look for it as most people don't need to advertise it on the internets. It might not be your dream housing but it'll give ya a hot and a cot. I'd pick Nome over Barrow or Kotzebue mainly because of the opportunities to do "stuff".
