How do you celebrate the 4th of July via means of fireworks in Alaska if it doesn't get dark in most of the state? Or if firework shows aren't common here, what other alternative ways is the 4th of July celebrated here?

Our village always celebrated with fireworks for New Years. Basically two holiday worth of fireworks in one night.

Wasilla used to do the fireworks on the 3rd around 11pm. This year it'll be on the 4th at 8pm. I've never even bothered to go to the fireworks on the 3rd/4th here.
But I love fireworks! So I hit Houston's Founder's Day show in mid-August, the fair fireworks, New Year's Eve Fireworks and the guy in Palmer that does a show for his birthday in... what, February each year? I've also time a few Anchorage runs with the Fur Rendezvous fireworks.

We BBQed, drank beer and launched a couple hundred dollars worth of fireworks over the slough.

Today we celebrated with a bike parade through downtown. Police escort and the fire trucks behind.

After the parade we came back to the house for dinner and the rain came. So we decided not to head to the beach to shoot fireworks since it is a little chilly and we don't want to take the new baby out in it.

Yeah but when is usually the best time, when it is most dark? Because it doesn't get very dark at night here from June thru August, trying to see fireworks in broad daylight is a challenge.

New Year's Eve... a lot of people do fireworks for New Year's. That is right after Winter Solstice, so it is most certainly dark.

There was something going on in North Pole, but I didn't go. Stayed at home, BBQed, drank a little wine, and got rained on a couple of times. But it was quite a nice day overall.

Yeah, I heard about that and I think a bunch of folks went out to the parade in Ester too, but the 5th is my niece's birthday so we usually have a big thing out at my cousin's place on the 4th or 5th. She got a couple of remote control helicopters (one for the slough and one for the trees, lol), a bow & arrow and a tackle box with a bunch of fishing gear, so she was a pretty happy kid.

Did you guys BBQ anything interesting, or just standard 4th burgers and dogs? We just had moose burgers and dogs this year... pretty tasty.

The weather was pretty nice yesterday after all the rain this weekend. Not too bad!
