We went to a yard sale back in the summer and a man was selling out and moving to Barrow. He was a high school teacher. About 3-4 months later we were at the flea market and he was there. We asked what he was doing back and I thought his response was so funny I liked to fell out, He said " It was freaking cold up there and I didn't think it would be that cold." How could someone go to Alaska and NOT expect it to be cold??
I know a lady who has been here nearly a decade that had absolutely no idea where "Barrow" was in Alaska when she got on the plane. She came from Los Angeles (she imigrated to the US in the early 1970's and her family is very successful there), and was thinking only that she hadn't seen snow since she was a child...
She was really in for a surprise! It took her a couple of years to learn how to dress properly here. But even though she travels quite a bit, she probably will call Barrow home as long as she can find a way to stay here.

Well, the guy in the movie named Beau is apparently a dead ringer for a friend of mine -- or so his (young adult) children tell us. I'm not sure what a "funky vampire" is like, but yes we do have politicians!
I saw this movie, didn't look anything like the Barrow I remember. The only two things they got right was the name of the town, Barrow and utilador.
I lived in Fairbanks for a number of years, and it does get colder in the central part of the state than in Barrow.
Megensmom, Central can get real cold, -45 to -60 for extended periods of time, however, like most small villages in central Alaska, people all look out for each other, this is what makes Alaska different than most places. A bit of advice, when you arrive in Central, listen to what the locals have to say, it will save you allot time and energy.
The locals in Central so far are not only very helpful but also very welcoming to us at least the ones we have spoken to.
I think the fact that people help others is something that I will really like,I like the idea of be part of a community not just a number for the county to use to ask for more tax money.
I'm gonna get this flick, I love a good cheesy horror movie. The more zombies the better, especially if I can give co-workers names to some of the characters....lol
If you are into zombies and vampires you should consider moving to Juneau. They have an over abundance of them there.
It says it was in Barrow and totally freaked me out. Has anyone seen it? Does Barrow look anything like what they were showing?
Is there any place in Alaska that actually has 30 days of time where it is actually that totally dark? I have had 3 people call me just tonight after they have seen it asking me if Barrow was a real place and a ton of questions.
They actually did very little filming here in Alaska; sorry I can't remember exactly where they did the major part of the filming. Watch the credits at the end of the movie. I didn't want it myself. People making these movies usually do so outside of AK. and have it set as if it were really here; first of all, they don't have a clue as to weather, daylight, etc., so basically I find their movies boring and off kilter since they don't even take the time to research. The movie "Insomnia" perfect example. DeNiro going nuts cause of all the daylight. Well in the movie there was snow on the ground. When we get all of that light it is in the summer and there is no snow on the ground. See what I mean?
It is possible. Maybe we need a sub-forum for vampire slayers.
