How does anyone live on $4434 a month?! I couldn't live on twice that amount. Triple that amount and we're getting by.

^I live on approximately that amount after taxes give or take a few hundred depending on how lazy I am that week, and with 3 kids at that. The state of Alaska considers this borderline poverty, but without a mortgage or rent cost I think I live like a relative king. Sure a couple extra thousand a month wouldn't hurt, but all my basic needs and more are met with plenty left over for savings and splurging.

Reviving this classic to deposit this shocking bit o' news here. I tried to pull up the referenced article, but couldn't. I suspect it might have something to do with my speed-of-light internet situation.

And Ketchikan is now about up to $1000 a month for a one bedroom apt.

I was recently poking around ads in Fairbanks and could not find a small cabin with a holding tank for under $1000/mo. At that, not that it's really off-putting to me, but the one (singular) that I did find for $1000/mo was up a super crappy road. No utilities were included, not even heating fuel or plowing. It was not an appealing or efficient looking place. I could not detect any real redeeming quality besides that it was an available place to live. It was huge and it had three stories, neither of which is a plus to me. Actually, it is in a nice area off CHSR, if you ignore the fact that it's at the end of a steep, treacherous road.

Ahh, no, sorry... I lied. There was one cabin for $800/mo that included all utilities that was out past 24-mi CHSR, which is quite a haul to town, for those who are not familiar with the area. I've been out there before and it's in a neat spot, but it's a filthy little place that has not been well cared for.

You can rent a dry cabin or an "efficiency" in town for less than that, but, yikes. Dry cabin every time over town.

You exist you don’t live, but then it’s not nearly as sad when the end comes. Filthy rich people will be very sad at the end. I don’t know anyone making 13k a month unless they are doing something sketchy.

BS ... If you can't live on $54K a year then you need to think about what the hell you're doing with your $$.

I'm pretty sure Erik was just joking around with that comment.
