Sometimes you have service and sometimes you don't.

I have Verizon and you will only have service in the various towns along the way. I've heard GCI is even worse. But pretty much expect to have no service most of the way.

Just understand that GCI calls are pretty expensive in Canada. International roaming. We had to use ours to make a call to a hotel. That booking cost us $37 on our phone bill.
We used our gps on the phones for directions to our hotel. Let the gps connect via WiFi then put phone in airplane mode. Directions still worked.

We had pretty good luck with AT&T, but like everywhere...pretty much just in the towns and cities. We mostly connect via wifi too, keeps costs down. For texting to friends and family, and for emergencies, we use an InReach unit.
