[quote=karfar;3407871]after I ask you guys this, & if it's been talked about before, my apologies. Have any of you read or seen "Into the Wild"? I just read & saw the movie a month ago. I know there were others before him who did what he did but since I only know of this one, that's why I'm talking about it. I'm assuming you Alaskans think this Alexander Supertramp was either nutty or very stupid, but I gotta say I have admiration for the guy. I myself have always wondered how cool it would be to hitchhike around the country, to just say goodbye to my possessions & see what would happen. I give him kudos to just get out there & do what he set out to do, no matter how unprepared he was, not many of us actually do what we dream of. What do you think?[/QUOTE

Any true Alaskan knows better to do what this guy did without being prepared. Sure Alaska may sound like a wild place to fulfill your romantic or adventurer type dreams, but Alaska can be deadly as this guy and others have found out. If you're going to venture into the wilderness you better have survival skills and know alot about the temperatures, wildlife, etc. And I figure if ya give away your possessions and travel the country, well, you'll more then likely end up broke, homeless and hungry somewhere, sometime.

So one of the most important survival tools would be a laptop with a satellite modem to post to CD about the bear trying to eat you?

The chalet/cabin? He absolutely loved it. Poor man...he really did try to view it through my eyes, it is very secluded, surrounded by empty lots with views of a lake from the decks. Only neighbour within view resides only in the summer on the weekends. The garage had him enthralled.
We did hear back late last eve...and whilst our offer is still being considered, we were declined at the time. It seems the owners didn't expect it to sell so soon when they listed it. They don't wish to leave until the end of June. We have to be moved to Alaska by the end of June.
We really want this home, though....and we did have the best offer (there were 3). We are willing to work with them...which means I will stay in Wyoming a little longer than planned then reside for awhile in a pet-friendly hotel probably in Wasilla (if I can find one at that time). I am attempting to not get my hopes up...but it is hard!

Thank you for that, Barkingowl...my concern is tourists. I don't know for certain when that begins in Alaska nor if Wasilla sees an influx.
I went to Montana last month and Motel 6 didn't even blink (or charge) with a pet.

Kicks Barkley for saving the hotel list I found. You know more than I do now about Alaska and I live here.
