Believe it or not, there are TEN species of owls in Alaska! It is a land of owls here...their calls are deep and mysterious. Their call can carry through the woods for up to a mile. Two weeks ago we had a couple of great-horned owls in back of the house, hooting from dusk to dawn, but they have moved on. I haven't heard them lately. Maybe the pair of nesting eagles in back of my house chased them away...they are not very tolerant of other raptors around their nest.
The great-horned owl, and the saw-whet owl, are the only kinds I have personally seen here...

We used to have a nest near our house as a kid. It wasn't safe to walk down the driveway. Even tho the nest was way the heck up in the air the adults would swoop down and rake you with their talons. Our neigbor got hit pretty good.

Note that Barrow is located at a place called Ukpeagvik (you will see various spellings), which in Inupiaq basically means: "Place we hunt snowy owls." A Snowy Owl is an "Okpik".

All of that may well be true, young man... but, still, this just all appears to be a simple excess of hormones!

For real? I dated a guy for 7 years who was from Malaysia....unfortunately, we broke up & he ended up moving back there 4 years ago. I don't know if you saw my post earlier, maybe it was on another thread, but I mentioned that I just went to Malaysia 2 years ago, it was an awesome experience. So anyway, good luck with her, you'll be great!

Smile Miles

Ok, not miles but I thought it would be easier on those who may read this.
It is about 500 Kilometers from here to the centre of Paris..

Si Vous croyez que Vous perdez Votre français, c'est qu'il Vous faut plus de pratique. Moi, j'ai même perdu ma langue maternelle.

Takeo.

Talking Hormones ?

Hormones ? Everything is possible, of course. I have been called a lot of things in my life but I have not been called a young man for a while now (I am 61) but I must admit that I never grew up. (I do thank you for the compliment, though).

She is much younger than me (58) but she looks 40 for much and is still the prettiest girl whom I ever saw.

Takeo.

61 !!!

What's with these lowing noises then? You can't have many hormones left, so maybe she beaned with an oar?

Incidentally, at 58 if she was born and raised on that river, yes she can talk to birds and knows the ways of spirits. Pay close attention to what she says... you'll learn a lot.

Hmmm.... if you won't say it's Akiak or Tuluksak, the next village with the name of a river is Aniak. If that's true, trust me on this: you are in trouble. BIG trouble. (Tell me the first 4 letters of her last name at birth, and maybe I'll tell you how much trouble you're in!)
