She waivered but never quit and in the last 20 years, earned a masters and should earn 5x her first US salary this year. Someone suggested re-starting your career in the lower 48 first. I think they said Texas. Frankly, that’s a great suggestion. You’ll have more options and the cost of living will be less. After you’re got your credentials, moving to Alaska and starting a new dream will be easier.

Thanks, do you think she would be willing to talk to me?

Except I imagined nothing. I quoted US Census Bureau’s 2016 estimated population numbers found in that link I provided. I don't know what the numbers are today for specific parts of Alaska. But this was for Alaska in general as was the original post.

I'm excited for her because she is a smart, accomplished person that helps others and wants to do more. We need more people like that around.
Why on earth would it be odd when she stated in her original post that she wanted to raise a family there.

"I want Alaska as my final destination, where I'm going to take root, find a good man and have my kids."

Yes, I read the whole post. Just because i focused on one aspect doesn't mean I'm disregarding the rest of her profile. That is a given.

I was excited because she would be doing something adventurous by following her dreams, and wants to be well prepared. I have been interested in Alaska for years, but will most likely never be able to visit for various reasons. So I envy her the chance, and am excited for her for that reason, not whatever you thought it was. For that I get negative posts? I said nothing untrue, and provided links to back myself up. I have nothing to apologize for. Or maybe this is something she should take into account. But then cranky people can be found everywhere, and it isn't me.

Sigh. Except that the numbers for "Alaska in general" are really pretty worthless as the OP will almost certainly begin her life here in one of the populated areas where the famed ratio doesn't exist. People who live here understand this.

What is it about Alaska that makes those who've never even lived here think they're experts on the place because Google?

I'm in the OP's corner and think she'll do fine no matter where she lands.

From your info:
36 years old - female - single - never married - no kids...

You are an odd-ball supreme! Meaning not many like you around in this crazy world...

So you may even make it in Alaska if you ever get there in the first place.
I do not care what your present job is, medical doctor or waitress, it does not matter.

What matters is that you must be convinced that you can do it.

Do I need to say more?

Irman, no one asked for your rude commentary. The only thing that's "oddball" here is your belief that anyone wants or needs to hear your uninformed opinion on the topic.

Sure, it's obvious you don't.

AFAIK only parts of the state where men outnumber women in a meaningful way are the North Slope and the Aleutians, because of the oil and fishing industries respectively. Those men tend to be young seasonal laborers and/or people who have lives and families elsewhere (a typical schedule for someone working on the Slope is two weeks on, two weeks off, with the off time spent anywhere, often outside of Alaska).

So unless the OP is looking to travel to the remotest corners of the state to pick up a 19 year old slime line worker, or a tool pusher who already has a wife back in Texas, your statistic is not relevant. This is what people are trying to explain to you.

Do you live in Alaska? I'm guessing not. One of its redeeming features is that outside of Anchorage (only large city) it is not really part of the US in a significant way

Spoken like a true American. Since your own experience with one daughter seems to contradict what I've said in general, it must all be a bunch of hype. Reality is comprised of what you see on your doorstep. Everything else is twaddle.

My wife and I have a combined 46 years of experience in education. I can assure you that remedial classes exist at the college level, and our illiteracy rates are staggering. There are lots of stats, but here are 3 particularly insightful ones: In America, 50% of the unemployed between the ages of 16 and 21 cannot read well enough to be considered functionally literate; and... approximately 50% of Americans read so poorly that they are unable to perform simple tasks such as reading prescription drug labels. 50% of adults cannot read a book written at an eighth grade level. These are stats sourced from recent studies.

For college students, nearly 10 percent of the college graduates surveyed thought Judith Sheindlin, TV's "Judge Judy," is a member of the U.S. Supreme Court. Less than 20 percent of the college graduates knew the effect of the Emancipation Proclamation. More than a quarter of the college graduates did not know Franklin D. Roosevelt was president during World War II; one-third did not know he was the president who spearheaded the New Deal. “The National Survey of America’s College Students” from 2006 claimed that about 20 percent of U.S. college students completing four-year degrees—and 30 percent of students earning two-year degrees—have only basic quantitative literacy skills. Meaning they are unable to estimate if their car has enough gasoline to get to the next gas station or calculate the total cost of ordering office supplies.

It's not hype. It's truth. BTW... how many countries can you name?
