They are panning, not getting enough to brag about but it is enjoyable. Most everything here that you can pan has someones claim on it so you have to ask around for permission but several have let us.
No steady job for him yet but he has been doing some odd jobs. He has a call back interview next week so I think this will land him a good position.
The weather is nice and the mosquitos are bad. My kids look like they have the chicken pox even with spaying them, long sleeves, and bug nets because the little suckers get inside and get you at night. We try and kill everyone we see but even with them being large we miss some.

I find that hard to believe with the hard freeze that you must have up there; but I believe you. Thought we had the worst of them down here.

The freeze doesn't seem to effect the populations, it seems the amount of standing water in the spring, summer really gets them going. With the slow wet spring in Fairbanks we are seeing more mosquitos than average.

That's true. I live "in the woods" next to a burbling little creek that runs year around, and might see a half dozen mosquitoes all summer. There is no standing water anywhere around here, and the sandy, gravelly soil probably is a big factor also. However, black and deer flies are a problem, and last summer we had horseflies like never before. I hate those damned things, they're like little terrorists.

Those things drive the caribou crazy on the slope in summer.

Default horsefly bites

I went to a summer camp on time that was plagued by horseflys. I remember the bite as similar to a stab with a hot needle, very unpleasant.

Yes, they fly around your head at Mach 1, sounding like a minature jet, all the while making you more and more nervous because you know what they're capable of.

Then all of a sudden, silence.

Now it's really time to worry because they probably landed on your back and are starting to drill a hole in it.
